What are MBBR Systems?

MBBR systems (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) are a modern method that combines biological processes with carrier media technology in wastewater treatment. MBBR systems offer a more compact and efficient solution compared to activated sludge technology.

In this system, floating carrier media made of HDPE material is used. Microorganisms attach to the surface of the media as biofilm and break down pollutants. Additionally, the moving media structure ensures continuous cleaning. MBBR systems stand out with high treatment efficiency.

As a result, the treatment of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus can be achieved in a single system. MBBR systems are an ideal solution, especially for facilities with space constraints. Therefore, MBBR systems are successfully used in industrial and municipal applications. Moreover, existing facilities can be easily converted to MBBR systems.

MBBR Nasıl Çalışır?

MBBR sisteminde atıksu önce ön arıtma aşamasında ızgara ve kum tutuculardan geçer. Bunun yanı sıra büyük partiküller uzaklaştırılır. Daha sonra biyofilm reaktörüne yönlendirilir.

MBBR Treatment Process

1. Introduction & Bar Screen
Raw wastewater is taken into the system, and coarse solids (plastic, fibrous waste, stones) are separated by the screen. Pump protected.

2. Equalization Tank
Flow and organic load fluctuations are balanced. Instant peaks do not stress the MBBR biofilm.

3. Anoxic MBBR
Denitrification for nitrogenous compounds (NO₃⁻). Mixer + carrier beds, anaerobic biofilm grows.

4. Aerobic MBBR
The main treatment — biofilm on carriers (K1/K3) removes BOD/COD, NH₄⁺ undergoes nitrification. Diffuser aeration.

5. Sedimentation
The biofilm and suspended solids are separated using a lamella or conical settler. The clear filtrate is discharged from the supernatant.

6. Disinfection & Exit
Pathogens are eliminated with UV or chlorine dosage. The effluent meets discharge limits or is reused in irrigation.
