What is an MBR Bioreactor?

MBR bioreactor is an advanced treatment technology that combines biological wastewater treatment processes with membrane filtration technology within a single system. The final settling tank used in traditional activated sludge systems is replaced by micro or ultrafiltration membranes.

As a result, the treated water is purified from suspended solids, bacteria, and viruses by passing through the membrane pores. MBR bioreactor technology is an indispensable solution, especially in facilities where the reuse of treated water is targeted.

It also stands out with its compact structure in areas with land constraints and in projects requiring high discharge standards. Our systems are designed with capacities ranging from 50 m³/day to 10,000 m³/day. For smaller capacities, you can check our package treatment systems.

How Does an MBR Bioreactor Work?

In the MBR bioreactor system, wastewater first enters the biological reactor. Here, aerobic microorganisms break down organic pollution. Thus, biological treatment is completed in the initial stage.

Additionally, membrane modules placed inside or outside the biological reactor separate the treated water from the sludge. Thanks to the membrane's pore size of 0.04-0.4 μm, bacteria and viruses are completely retained.

As a result, the obtained permeate (filtrate water) can be discharged directly. Furthermore, by feeding into a reverse osmosis system, industrial quality reclaimed water can be produced. The system operates fully automatically with PLC and SCADA.

How Does an MBR Bioreactor Work?

Advantages of MBR Treatment

Superior Treatment Quality Water with reuse quality and effluent values of BOD <5 mg/L, COD <30 mg/L, TSS <1 mg/L.
Compact Plant Area Requires 50-70% less space compared to traditional facilities.
High MLSS Concentration High biological treatment efficiency with 8,000-12,000 mg/L MLSS.
Water Recovery The permeate quality is suitable for RO feed or direct irrigation water.
Low Sludge Production Thanks to the long sludge age, sludge production is reduced by 30-50%.
Modular Structure Capacity can be easily expanded with additional membrane modules.

MBR replaces the secondary clarifier in conventional activated sludge with membrane filtration. This results in 50-70% less footprint, eliminates the need for disinfection, and produces reuse-quality effluent (BOD <5 mg/L, TSS <1 mg/L). Conventional systems require additional advanced treatment units to achieve this quality.
With proper maintenance and chemical cleaning (CIP), MBR membranes have an average lifespan of 7-10 years. Key factors affecting membrane life include pre-treatment quality, chemical cleaning frequency, operating pressure, and wastewater characteristics.
MBR systems are designed for capacities from 50 m³/day to over 10,000 m³/day. Package MBR units serve small-scale facilities while modular MBR lines handle large-scale projects. Capacity expansion is easily achieved by adding membrane modules.
MBR systems consume an average of 0.8-1.5 kWh/m³. The main energy sources are aeration blowers (50-60%), membrane vacuum/pressure pumps (20-30%), and mixers/recirculation pumps (10-15%).
MBR permeate can be reused for agricultural irrigation, landscape irrigation, industrial process water, cooling water, toilet flushing, and vehicle washing. When combined with reverse osmosis (RO), near-drinking water quality can be achieved.
We use Memsis, a world leader in membranes, in our projects: GenMBR (Türkiye) membrane modules. They are manufactured according to project needs, wastewater characteristics, and customer preference.
