Engineer Recommendation

Transitioning to biological treatment without a bar screen in your wastewater inlet line means that the pumps will burn out within 6-12 months and the membranes will clog prematurely. A small initial investment of 3-5% pays for itself many times over in the following 20 years.

Perforated Sheet

Perforated Sheet Type

Side walls and bottom made of perforated stainless steel. Provides filtration from all directions, suitable for more precise mesh options. Preferred in general wastewater applications.

Mesh: 3 – 20 mm
Cubuklu (Cage)

Bar Screen Type

The sides and bottom are woven with vertical stainless steel rods. Low pressure loss at high flow rates, easy cleaning. Popular in municipal and industrial open channels.

December: 15 – 50 mm
Hybrid

Hybrid (Perforated + Rod)

Side walls are rod-shaped (high flow), and the bottom is perforated (micro-particle retention). It provides the most comprehensive protection. It is recommended for precise applications before pumping.

Maximum protection
Basket bar screen is the first line of defense in wastewater treatment plants. Large solid materials such as cloth pieces, rags, paper, plastic, branches, and stones in wastewater — if not separated at the inlet line — can damage pumps, clog pipelines, and reduce the efficiency of the subsequent biological process. The basket screen allows for easy cleaning by collecting these pollutants in a basket at the beginning of the system.

As Arsistek, we are an engineering company that has produced and installed basket screens in over 150 projects since 2014, gaining field experience across a wide range from municipal wastewater treatment plants to textile, food, chemical, and slaughterhouse industries. Our basket screens are suitable for applications of all scales with 304 and 316 stainless steel body options, 3 mm – 50 mm mesh openings, and 0.5 – 100 m³/hour flow capacities.

What is a Basket Screen?

A basket screen is a mechanical filtration equipment positioned at the beginning of the wastewater line that retains solid materials from the passing water. It gets its name from the "basket" shaped stainless steel sieve structure that holds the pollutants. This basket is periodically pulled out by the operator, the solids inside are emptied, and after cleaning, the basket is placed back in its position.

It is the cornerstone of the mechanical pre-treatment stage in wastewater treatment. It works in conjunction with other pre-treatment equipment (sand trap, oil separator, coarse screen, fine screen) and provides clean flow to the subsequent stages of the system.

In which sectors is it used?

The basket grate is the first equipment in the pre-treatment stage for both domestic and industrial wastewater applications. Below, you can find the most common areas of use and the sector-specific grate opening recommendations.

Textile Industry

It is critical to separate fiber fragments, fabric residues, and towel scraps in textile wastewater from dyeing and finishing processes.

Recommended: 10-15 mm

Food and Beverage

In slaughterhouses, dairy product, and beverage filling facilities, for the retention of large-sized organic materials such as meat pieces, bones, vegetable waste, shells, etc.

Recommended: 15-25 mm

Chemical Industry

Models with 316 stainless steel bodies are used for the separation of polymer flocs and crystal deposits in chemical process wastewater in corrosive environments.

Material: AISI 316

Domestic Wastewater

It is the first mechanical pre-treatment equipment used in package treatment facilities such as apartments, hotels, shopping malls, and hospitals. It generally operates in the range of 1-50 m³/hour.

Recommended: 5-10 mm

Municipal Treatment Facilities

At municipal wastewater treatment plants, high-capacity models are used at the inlet of the pumping line as a complement to the primary screening stage.

Recommended: 20-25 mm

Recycling Facilities

In the separation of fibers and micro-particles in the process waters of paper, plastic, and metal recycling, to protect the subsequent filtration stages.

Recommended: 3-5 mm

How Does a Basket Screen Work?

A simple yet ingenious design that operates on the principle of static gravity flow — it stops solids in wastewater while allowing the continuous flow of water.

1

Introduction

Wastewater enters the screen through the flanged inlet located at the upper part of the body.

2

Filtration

The water passes through the basket screen. All solid particles larger than the opening of the screen are retained within the basket.

3

Output

Filtered water is conveyed to the next stage of the system through the bottom or side flange.

4

Signal

The fill level sensor monitors capacity, triggers an alarm when the threshold is exceeded, or initiates automatic cleaning.

5

Cleaning

The basket is pulled out, the waste is emptied into the container, the basket is washed and placed back in its position.

Automatic Cleaning Module

In modern industrial applications, a fully automatic cleaning module is designed. When the fill threshold is exceeded, an electric actuator or pneumatic cylinder is activated, the basket is automatically transported outside, waste is removed via a conveyor, the basket is washed with a water jet, and it is returned to its place. The entire process is managed by a PLC and can be monitored in real-time from a remote monitoring system.

10 Fundamental Advantages of Basket Screens

When selected correctly, a basket grate guarantees the long life of your treatment plant. Here are the concrete benefits it will provide you.

01

Low Investment Cost

A much more economical investment compared to other pre-treatment equipment (automatic screening grid, shredder, etc.).

02

Protects the Pump

It prevents large solids from entering the system, thereby preventing pump burnouts, shaft seal failures, and downtime caused by overheating.

03

Ease of Maintenance

It is cleaned within minutes with the basket quick release/installation system, no special tools are required.

04

Long Lasting

Thanks to the stainless steel body and basket, a minimum problem-free service life of 15-20 years.

05

Low Pressure Loss

Thanks to the optimum hydraulic design, it does not create additional pump power requirements in the system (0.1-0.3 bar).

06

Flexible Mesh Selection

12 different bar spacing options from 3 mm to 50 mm — suitable for every application.

07

Modular Structure

It integrates with flanged connections, can be easily added to existing lines, and is simple to transport.

08

Automatic Models

It operates without an operator with an optional fill level sensor and automatic cleaning actuator.

09

CE Certified

Manufacturing in accordance with European standards can be used in export products.

10

Fast Delivery

Standard models are delivered within 1-2 weeks from stock, while custom manufacturing takes 3-5 weeks.
