Tobacco WWTP covers leaf processing, cigarette manufacturing and tobacco extract plants. Volume is moderate (50-500 m³/day) but nicotine toxicity demands specialized treatment.

Tobacco effluent: COD 2,000-8,000 mg/L, BOD 800-3,000 mg/L, nicotine 50-500 mg/L, dense polyphenols and chlorogenic acid. Color 3,000-10,000 Pt-Co.

Arsistek tobacco solutions combine equalization, coagulation, GAC adsorption and adapted biological treatment. Nicotine-tolerant biomass adaptation is critical.

Tobacco Effluent Characterization

Tobacco production has 3 main streams: leaf washing (dust, soil, pesticides), fermentation/casing (organic acids, sugars), extract production (high nicotine, polyphenols).

Extract stream is hardest — nicotine 500+ mg/L is toxic to bacteria. Without adapted biomass standard activated sludge fails.

Color comes from natural pigments (chlorophyll derivatives, polyphenols). Coagulation removes 60-70%; GAC polishing follows.

Activated Carbon Adsorption

GAC serves two purposes: nicotine capture and color removal.

GAC column with 15-30 min EBCT retains 95%+ nicotine. Regeneration cycle 6-12 months. Saturated carbon is thermally regenerated or disposed.

Adapted Biomass

Customized activated sludge with nicotine-tolerant Pseudomonas strain. Adaptation takes 8-12 weeks.

Adapted biomass metabolizes 100-200 mg/L nicotine. MLSS maintained 4,000-6,000 mg/L.

Full Process Flow

Tobacco WWTP in 6 stages:

  1. Screening + equalization
  2. Coagulation-flocculation: PAC/Fe2(SO4)3
  3. Primary clarifier or DAF
  4. Biological: Adapted activated sludge or MBR (SRT 10-15 d)
  5. GAC polishing
  6. Disinfection: Chlorine or UV

Total HRT 24-36 h. COD removal 95%+, color 90%+.
